Q. Why do I need a domain name?
A. A domain name gives you a
distinct identity on the Internet. Getting a domain name like "www.yourcompany.com" makes your company appear to
be more independent and professional. More importantly, it also allows visitors to
find you just by knowing the name of your company, like remembering a phone number ...
only easier!
The alternative would be to host your Web site under another domain like "www.JurgensIs.Com/YourCompany".
Your monthly hosting fees are substantially less and you don't pay a DNS registrar
to register your domain name. One draw back to this method is the inability for your
customers to find you simply by guessing at your domain name.
Q. What makes a domain valuable?
A. The value of a domain is determined
by several factors:
length - how long is the domain; is it short, sweet and memorable?
characters - does the domain includes any numbers or hyphens?
Certain names work well with hyphens, such as science-fiction, and others not so well, such as
do-it-now.
extension - .coms are the most valuable, with .net next, then .org. Some country domains,
such as .cc or .to, are increasing in value.
brand - is the domain or anything similar to it already being used in the
industry? Is the domain likely to confuse visitors? A strong, clear domain free of ties to
other sites/businesses is the most valuable.
generic or specific - is the domain name generic, likely to appeal to a wide audience
(music.com), or is it specific, and likely to only appeal to those interested in the
subject/business (bodypiercing.com).
Q. How do I register department.atdomain.com?
A. This is called a subdomain. You
have to contact your web host's administrator and have them add the subdomain name you
want to their DNS table, and then point it to the IP address of the machine which will
handle calls to that subdomain. If you're using Virtual Hosting, with multiple domains on
the same machine/web server, the admin will have to add it to the web server's
configuration. The bottom line is that you don't "buy" a subdomain in the same
fashion as a domain.
Q. Is there a way to keep track of my Web site statistics?
A. Yes. If we host
your site, a statistics package is included for no additional
charge (typically www.YourDomain.com/statistics). A counter can be added to each
Web site, however, a statistics package will give you much more
information about your visitors including where they came from and what
page they were on when they left your Web site. Counters, though
free, are visible to all visitors whereas statistics packages are for
you only.
Q. Do I need an Internet access account if my company gets a Web site?
A. No. Your Web site exists
on servers located offsite from your business. However, we strongly encourage our
clients to get a personal Internet access account, if only for the purpose of checking
e-mail sent to you by the visitors to your Web site.
Q. How can I get my materials to Jurgens Information Services for new or updated work?
A. There are three ways to do this.
- The quickest way would be through the use of email. Once you enter some
instructions for us regarding the new information, you can enter your text into the email
or attach the word processing document or graphics files to the email message.
- If
your attachments are over 500KB in size, it is more efficient to
FTP the
files to/from us. Several
email post-offices limit delivery
of mail over certain sizes.

- Another way would be to simply mail the paper work to us. You can also include
pictures and literature for scanning.
- The last way depends on your proximity to our office. Quite often we have people
running errands, and they can swing by and pick up your materials personally for no
additional charge.
Q. Our company has no art work or logos. Can you help us with this?
A. Yes. We can assist in
designing custom logos and color schemes to help you project the presence you want for
your organization. If you desire extensive graphical imaging, we also have several
talented graphic artists.
